Change

I received my O Magazine a couple weeks ago with Oprah and First Lady Michelle Obama on the cover. A refreshing change I can appreciate since Oprah has been featured alone on the cover of the magazine for 105 issues. Indeed, this is a year of change.

Change is the buzz word of the past year. It is an ambiguous and lofty word that leave the skeptics too much to chew on and spit back at you. They are entitled to their opinion but I do not have to listen. As a result of these opinions I have limited my exposure to news coverage. I have never really been a news person in the first place. It is at worst negative and pessimistic. It does nothing but feed my worst fears.

When my father would hand me the newspaper as a young girl I glanced the front page, read the editorials/opinions, checked out my horoscope (Libra), read the comics and delved into my favorite sections of Arts, Culture and Literature. I left the sports, international news, business and politics for mom and dad.

These days I take more interest in business and politics but the Obama naysayers have directed me right back to my childhood. Just give me the horoscopes, comics and the crossword puzzle I will never finish. I do not need to subject myself to another countdown of the first 100 days and Obama still has not fixed everything Bush f**ked up.

I am not asking for complete submission or worshiping of Obama in all his glory. I am only asking for well thought out arguments with actual information you have found, analyzed and formed your own opinions. Do not give me regurgitated information from Rush Limbaugh or whatever political commentator you are listening to on your daily commute to work and back. Have you even read the President's 2010 Budget? Get back to me when you do.

The information is available before the media and political commentaries rip it to shreds and manipulate it to a pulp. I have not witnessed any other president under such scrutiny and observation. I applaud President Obama for his commitment to transparency and accountability. You want to know how your money is being spent then check Recovery.gov.

President Obama does not walk on water and he cannot turn water into wine. He will not fix this economy in the first 100 days. If he does more power to him and more power to us.

I was not expecting miracles when I waited for three hours at the poles and voted for Barack Obama. I was voting for change from the past eight years of sh*t. I voted for a visionary leader who has faced challenges and overcome obstacles. He is empathic, eloquent, down-to-earth and no-nonsense. He is a great hybrid edition of a President in my opinion.

Change is possible. Change is the only constant (Heraclitus). Change would have happened with or without Barack Obama, but I wanted the change he spoke of and he has not disappointed.

Bump on a Log

Don't be a bump on a log during  National Park Week . Instead, take advantage of waived entrance fees to all 392 national parks by finding a park near you to enjoy America's Great Outdoors. You can search for national parks near you by name, location, activity or by topic at Find a Park  website. Matt and I have spent the last couple weekends hiking through  Shawnee State Park  and one of our favorite Metro Parks  Slate Run . Hence, the picture of the frog at Slate Run that made for a great insert. I took more than a couple pictures of the frog and thanked him for his time. He just stooped in a nonchalant manner during the entire photo shoot. A total professional. Along with National Park Week comes Earth Day  on April 22. Learn more about Earth Day through the United States Environmental Protection Agency website . Take time to not only enjoy the great outdoors this week, but make a commitment to protect the environment.  E...

Indians and Education

The Scout Report -- Volume 14, Number 21 via scout.wisc.edu on 6/2/08 Links of interests compiled on Indians and Education from The Scout Report. I haven't listened to the Sherman Alexie interview, but it is described as "fantastic" which I certainly believe it must be and will be...because it is Sherman Alexie. The Reservation Life: Helga Teiwes Photography website has some beautiful photographs that made me homesick for the Southwest and my family.

Speaks to Your Success as a Librarian

My latest blessing in disguise, as someone said, is that I was not accepted to any of the three PhD programs I applied. I have had many people tell me it is for a reason, it is a blessing, there is a silver lining in my clouds of gray. The one school I was most disappointed with was U-Dub, but it was really "location, location, location" that left my heart a bit bruised. I think a common downfall, if you may call it that, is that I am a successful librarian. I have no aptitude as a researcher that is apparent to the PhD admissions committee. This is more than likely a truth. I have never thought of myself as a methodologically minded person. Perhaps, it is a blessing and not a curse. Only time will tell, but I am counting on a blessing, definitely a blessing. The best news is that I can return to New Mexico without having to worry about a 4-5 year commitment to a PhD program. I can do whatever I please and that might mean being jobless for a good 5-6 months after I leave Indi...
